Metallica Saves Tomorrowland After Stage Fire Destroys Festival’s Centerpiece

Heavy metal icons Metallica came to the rescue of Belgium’s legendary electronic music festival, Tomorrowland, after a devastating fire destroyed its main stage just days before the event.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 16, a massive blaze tore through Tomorrowland’s elaborate, ice-themed main stage—just hours before campsites were set to open to 200,000 eager attendees. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

In an incredible turn of events, a brand-new stage was constructed within 24 hours, right in front of the charred wreckage—thanks in large part to Metallica. The band airlifted elements of their European tour setup from Austria to Belgium overnight, allowing organizers to rebuild in record time.

Electronic music star Martin Garrix, who performed on the new stage, shared a photo with drummer Lars Ulrich, writing:

“I cannot believe I’m actually typing this… but my set at Tomorrowland is still happening! Huge shoutout to the incredible Tomorrowland team—and to Metallica for coming through with the new stage parts.”

Metallica replied simply with a black heart emoji—a humble nod to their quiet heroics.

Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen praised the team effort:

“It’s a miracle and we are beyond happy to be opening. Two hours ago, we were still demolishing the old stage.”

The rebuilt main stage opened on time Friday at 2 PM, with the first DJ set kicking off at 4 PM, keeping the festival’s legendary energy alive.

Meanwhile, Metallica will return to the UK and Ireland in 2026 for their massive M72 World Tour, with shows planned in Dublin, London, Glasgow, and Cardiff.
