Even after decades of discovering new stars, American Idol still knows how to uncover voices that feel truly rare. On the season premiere, that moment belonged to 22-year-old Brooks Rosser — a quiet medication technician whose heartfelt audition left judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood completely captivated.
Before singing a single note, Rosser shared the deeply personal reason music means so much to him. Working at a dementia care facility, he found that singing helped him connect with his grandmother during her illness — and later with the patients he now cares for every day. For Brooks, music isn’t about applause; it’s about connection, comfort, and humanity.
Standing in front of the judges, Rosser admitted he had almost no experience performing for crowds. The only audience he’d ever known, he said, were the patients who light up when he sings for them. That honesty only made what followed more powerful.
Rosser opened his audition with Joshua Slone’s “Your Place At My Place,” instantly revealing a voice that felt both fragile and unforgettable. Luke Bryan was the first to react. “I just want to hear more,” he said, encouraging Brooks to step away from work occasionally and share his gift on bigger stages. “No matter what you sing, it’s going to be beautifully unique.”
Carrie Underwood couldn’t agree more. Clearly moved, she offered one of the night’s highest compliments: “You’re a unicorn. It’s one of one. That’s really cool.” The label stuck — a perfect description for a voice and presence that felt impossible to replicate.
Lionel Richie then asked Brooks what song he sings most often to his patients. When Rosser answered Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” Richie invited him to perform it on the spot. The impromptu second performance only deepened the magic.
“It’s so good, man,” Richie said afterward. “You have a unique style all your own.”
With that, all three judges unanimously sent Brooks through to the next round, placing a Golden Ticket in his hands and fulfilling a lifelong dream.
“I’ve always been shy and insecure,” Rosser admitted afterward. “So hearing compliments from people like that really means something.” His vulnerability only made fans love him more.
The moment didn’t end on stage.
