Brooks Rosser once dreamed of seeing his last name printed across the back of a professional soccer jersey. Now, at 22, he’s seeing it rise on a very different stage — American Idol.
The Bel Air, Maryland native delivered one of Hollywood Week’s most emotional performances, earning a spot in the Top 30 after a heartfelt rendition of Sam Barber’s “Drowning.” But for Rosser, the moment meant far more than advancing in a competition — it marked the continuation of a journey that began with devastating loss.
A Dream Shattered
Before taking the stage, viewers learned about the injury that changed everything.
Growing up shy and struggling to make friends, Rosser found belonging through soccer. From the age of six, the sport became his identity — and his dream was clear: go pro.
“My dream for soccer was always to go pro, to see my last name on my back with a number that I liked,” he shared.
But during his freshman year of high school, a routine free kick turned catastrophic.
“I planted my left foot to kick it, and I felt like a gear switch in my lower left back, and I couldn’t feel my legs.”
The injury, as he described it, “snapped my back in half.” In an instant, the future he had envisioned disappeared.
“I was lost for a long time,” he admitted.
Finding Music in the Aftermath
In the quiet aftermath of that life-altering moment, Rosser picked up a guitar — and something shifted.
“I didn’t want to put it down,” he said.
Though he grew up in a musical household — his father plays harmonica and his mother sings — he never truly considered music as a serious path. Until now.
Today, while working as a Dementia Care Medication Technician, Rosser has begun carving out a new dream — one built not on goals and scoreboards, but on melody and meaning.
A Performance That Stopped the Room
During Hollywood Week, Rosser walked onstage armed with just an acoustic guitar and a quiet confidence. His take on “Drowning” was tender yet powerful, allowing his natural tone and soaring falsetto to shine.
The room fell still as he sang. Each lyric felt personal. Each note carried weight.
Judge Luke Bryan was visibly moved.
“A voice that will become so recognizable in years to come,” Bryan said. “And to be some of the first ears to ever hear it is pretty special. When you have this unique voice paired with these songs that are going to happen in your life, it’s going to be really, really special.”
On to the Top 30 — And Hawaii
By the end of the episode, Rosser’s name was called. He had officially advanced to the Top 30.
Next, he’ll head to Hawaii for the “Ohana Round,” filmed at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, where contestants will continue battling for a spot in the live shows.
Despite the milestone, Rosser remained humble.
“I mean, I had my doubts, but I guess they liked me enough,” he said with a smile.
