The latest episode of American Idol delivered one of its most emotional moments of the season when contestant Hannah Harper stepped onto the stage with a deeply personal tribute.
During the show’s touching “Ohana Round,” the Top 30 contestants performed in front of their loved ones at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. The round was designed to celebrate family and connection — and for Harper, the performance carried a powerful meaning.
A Song for “PawPaw Lew”
Instead of simply performing for the judges, Harper chose to honor someone who could no longer be there in person: her late grandfather, whom she lovingly called PawPaw Lew.
Before taking the stage, she shared how important he had been to her life and her musical journey.
Her grandfather, she explained, was the patriarch of a large, music-loving family. He played music until the very end of his life and inspired generations of relatives to sing and perform together.
To honor that legacy, Harper performed the classic gospel-country song Go Rest High on That Mountain by Vince Gill — a song that held special meaning for their family.
“He was the heart of our family,” Harper shared emotionally. “I wish my grandpa were here to hear it. My grandma is here tonight, and this was his favorite song.”

Dressed in a flowing red floral dress with her hair braided, Harper delivered a soft yet powerful performance that instantly drew the audience in.
Her voice carried a classic country tone — delicate at first, then swelling with emotion as the chorus rose.
As she sang the powerful lyrics about rest, faith, and remembrance, many in the audience were visibly moved. Family members watched from their seats while judges and industry guests listened quietly as the emotional tribute unfolded beneath the Hawaiian sky.
Some viewers even compared the warmth and authenticity of her voice to country legends like Dolly Parton and Lee Ann Womack.
Judges React to Her Authentic Country Sound
Judge Luke Bryan couldn’t hide his admiration for Harper’s voice.
“There are so many parallels with your voice and Dolly Parton,” Bryan told her. “It’s just beautifully country. When you hit that higher key at the end, your voice really opened up. You’ve got the goods.”
Judge Lionel Richie also praised her authenticity, describing her tone as a “straight, authentic mountain voice.”
Meanwhile, dancer and choreographer Sasha Farber offered a small observation, noting that Harper normally performs with a guitar, but despite that change she still delivered an emotional and genuine performance.

In the end, Harper’s heartfelt tribute paid off.
By the conclusion of the episode, she learned she had successfully advanced into the Top 20, moving one step closer to the ultimate goal of winning American Idol.
