Philmon Lee Delivers Emotional Tribute to Late Grandmother on American Idol

Philmon Lee left judges and fans speechless with a deeply moving performance on Season 24 of American Idol, dedicating his rendition of Kodaline’s “All I Want” to his late grandmother, Nancy, affectionately known as Mama Rice.

Before taking the stage at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa in Hawaii, Lee shared the personal significance of the song: “She was a huge supporter of me, and this was one of the songs she loved for me to sing to her. I sang it in hospice before she passed away, so hopefully y’all like it.”

Dressed in a deep blue shirt, Lee’s emotional ballad showcased his incredible vocal control and heartfelt delivery. Every note seemed to carry the weight of his dedication, drawing the outdoor audience into his intimate story. The performance culminated in a standing ovation, with Lee’s father shouting, “I love you, boy!”—a moment that brought tears to the singer’s eyes.

Judges were equally moved. Carrie Underwood praised his emotional journey on stage, Lionel Richie simply said, “Great job,” and Luke Bryan marveled at the range and power of his voice. Industry experts compared Lee’s tone to the likes of Teddy Swims and Chris Stapleton.

Lee’s heartfelt tribute secured his spot in the next round, keeping his dream alive after weeks of auditions and Hollywood rounds at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

As American Idol continues, the remaining contestants will perform at Disney’s Aulani Resort, with guidance from mentors Brad Paisley and KeKe Palmer, as America votes to decide who advances.

American Idol airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.
