When Hannah Harper first stepped onto the stage of American Idol Season 24, she had no idea how quickly her life would change. Now, the 25-year-old stay-at-home mom from Willow Springs, Missouri has officially earned a place in the Top 20, and fans are becoming more invested in her story every week.
A Powerful Audition That Started It All
Harper first caught the judges’ attention during her audition with an emotional original song called “String Cheese.” The deeply personal track was inspired by her struggle with Postpartum Depression, and the raw honesty of her performance instantly moved the panel.
Judge Carrie Underwood was brought to tears, while Luke Bryan praised Harper’s storytelling and vocal style, comparing her to country stars Dolly Parton and Kacey Musgraves.
For Harper, the entire experience still feels surreal.
“Every day I wake up wondering if I’m going to wake up from this dream,” she shared. “It’s exciting, but also overwhelming.”
Music Has Always Been Part of Her Life
Although the national spotlight may feel new, Harper has been surrounded by music for most of her life. She grew up performing in a family band with her parents and siblings, traveling across the country to play bluegrass and Christian music.
Those early experiences helped shape the heartfelt storytelling that now defines her sound.
Later, her life took a new direction when she married her husband, Devon Mendenhall, in 2016 after meeting him at church, where she worked as a worship leader. Today, the couple shares three young sons, who are still too young to fully understand their mom’s growing fame.
“They watched my audition and said, ‘That’s our house and that’s you, Mom,’” Harper laughed. “They think it’s cool, but they don’t really know what’s going on.”
“String Cheese,” Harper’s first solo release, quickly gained attention after her audition aired. The song debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard Country Digital Song Sales chart, an impressive milestone for an independent artist.
Even more surprising was how the song was recorded. Harper created it with her brother in a tiny studio behind his sawmill using just a microphone and a computer.
“I thought maybe a few people on Facebook would hear it,” she said. “Seeing it land on the Billboard charts was unbelievable.”
Surviving Hollywood Week
Harper continued building momentum during Hollywood Week in Nashville. There, she performed “A Little Past Little Rock” by Lee Ann Womack — a song suggestion from Luke Bryan after her audition.
Even though she accidentally mixed up a few lyrics during the performance, the judges didn’t seem to notice. In fact, Bryan stood up and cheered as she finished.
“I thought I was going home,” Harper admitted. “I was shaking in my boots.”
Instead, she advanced again.
A Tribute That Touched Everyone
One of Harper’s most emotional moments came during the “Ohana Round,” when she honored her late grandfather with a performance of “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill.
Calling her grandfather the patriarch of her family, Harper explained that he had been a huge influence on her life and musical journey. The heartfelt tribute earned her a standing ovation and secured her spot in the Top 20.
Luke Bryan once again praised her voice, noting the strong similarities to Dolly Parton and calling her tone “beautifully country.”
What’s Next for Hannah Harper
The competition now moves to Hawaii, where the remaining contestants will perform at Aulani Resort for America’s votes. They’ll also receive guidance from superstar mentors Brad Paisley and Keke Palmer.
For Harper, every new step still feels unbelievable.
“Every time they tell me I’m moving on to the next round, I can’t even believe it,” she said. “I feel like I’m living a dream.”
With her emotional storytelling, powerful country voice, and inspiring journey from small-town mom to national television star, many fans believe Hannah Harper’s American Idol story is only just beginning. 🎤✨
