Dick Van Dyke endured a sleepless night filled with worry and disbelief after learning of the sudden deaths of his longtime friends, Rob and Michele Reiner, his wife Arlene Silver has shared.
According to Silver, the news arrived swiftly and without clarity, leaving the beloved actor shaken as early reports spread before details were confirmed. For Van Dyke, the shock was deeply personal—an abrupt collision between celebration and tragedy that underscored how fragile even the most enduring friendships can feel in moments of crisis.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home on Sunday, Dec. 14, in what authorities later described as an apparent homicide. Their daughter, Romy Reiner, discovered the couple. In the days that followed, their son Nick Reiner was charged with first-degree murder, with prosecutors alleging the use of a knife. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole.

Silver spoke openly about the emotional impact in an Instagram video posted on Monday, Dec. 15, just one day after she and Van Dyke had celebrated his milestone 100th birthday.
“It was such a strange, wonderful, awful weekend,” Silver said. “Dick’s birthday was incredibly joyful, and then suddenly this happened. We went from happiness and relief to shock.”
She explained that Van Dyke struggled to sleep that night, staying awake as he searched for information while details were still unclear. “The first reports were so vague,” she said. “It just said two people were found in the house. We didn’t know what had happened.”
The loss hit especially close to home because of the deep history between Van Dyke and the Reiner family. Rob Reiner first met Van Dyke as a teenager, when his father, Carl Reiner, created The Dick Van Dyke Show, which aired from 1961 to 1966 and became one of television’s most enduring classics.
Silver shared that Rob and Michele were a constant presence in their lives. “They were always together, like Dick and me,” she said. “They treated me like family from the beginning. This feels unbelievable.”

Reflecting on the legacy surrounding their friendship, Silver added, “I can’t imagine if Carl Reiner and Norman Lear were still alive to see this. It’s heartbreaking.”
As tributes poured in from across Hollywood, many honored Rob and Michele not only for their creative contributions, but for their commitment to family, art, and activism. Norman Lear’s family released a statement expressing devastation, noting that Lear often referred to Rob Reiner as a son.
Silver acknowledged the emotional complexity of the moment—wanting to continue celebrating Van Dyke’s remarkable life while also honoring the profound loss of close friends.
“It’s terrible,” she said. “I want to keep celebrating Dick, but I also need to acknowledge this tragedy.”
In a community built on shared stories and decades-long bonds, the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner have left a quiet ache—felt most deeply by those who knew them not as icons, but as family.
