American Idol Judges Predict Big Things for Braden Rumfelt After Heartfelt Audition with Twin Brother

Braden Rumfelt, a 22-year-old substitute teacher from Murphy, North Carolina, had once dreamed of a career in professional sports. Encouraged by his father, he chased that dream until a congenital leg condition and multiple surgeries forced him to change course—and led him to American Idol.

“In high school, I started having knee pain in both legs,” Braden shared. “I found out I have a congenital issue—my legs are naturally in the wrong position. I needed two surgeries to realign them, and that put an end to my dreams of becoming an athlete.”

It was a tough reality. “It was hard seeing others do what I wanted to do,” he admitted.

Yet, through the hardship, Braden found a bright spot: singing alongside his twin brother, Kellen. “When I was hurt, I realized I felt better when I was singing,” he said. “Kellen was my voice of encouragement.”

Kellen, who’s always believed in his brother’s natural talent, called Braden his hero. “Growing up, I always felt his gift was music,” Kellen said. “I couldn’t be prouder of where he is now, chasing a new dream.”

Though nervous to audition, Braden called the moment a dream come true. “This is my dream. I didn’t think I’d get a chance like this. It’s really amazing,” he said.

Braden showed why on the Idol stage with a breathtaking rendition of “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town. Wearing a tan jacket, white tee, jeans, and white Nikes, he poured emotion into every note as Kellen played acoustic guitar.

Judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie were visibly moved.

Carrie said, “I’m happy and surprised. You’re so talented but seemed nervous—loosen up a bit, okay?”

Luke added with excitement, “I wanted to jump out there and shake you! You’re a racehorse, man.”

Lionel praised his vocal texture, saying, “Your top end is sweet and strong—like show business ready.”

Luke smiled, “He can sing. You’re going to do great.” Richie agreed, “Yes, you’re going to shine.”

Together, they shouted, “You’re going to Hollywood Week!”

Exiting the room, the brothers were ecstatic. “Is this real? I almost wanted to pinch myself,” Braden said. “With everything I’ve been through, I couldn’t be happier.”

Braden credited his twin for this moment. “We’ve got so many memories, and I wouldn’t be here without him. I love this guy.”

Behind closed doors, Luke and Lionel told producers, “He’s only at 80% of his potential. He’s got so much more to give.”

New episodes of American Idol air Mondays at 8/7c on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu.
