When Braden Rumfelt takes the stage on American Idol, it’s becoming clear that almost any song can turn into a memorable moment. The 22-year-old singer from Murphy, North Carolina has quickly built a reputation for his impressive vocal range and emotional delivery — and his latest performance proved it once again.
Rumfelt first captured the judges’ attention during his audition with Girl Crush by Little Big Town. Later, during Hollywood Week at Belmont University in Nashville, he showed a different side of his artistry with I’m Not the Only One by Sam Smith. Each round revealed a new layer of his talent.
During the Season 24 Ohana Round in Hawaii, Rumfelt surprised everyone again by crossing genres and performing the soulful classic If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys. Set against a tropical backdrop of palm trees and ocean air, the performance began with a soft, controlled tone before building into powerful, emotional moments that captivated the audience.
Adding to the special atmosphere, Rumfelt’s twin brother accompanied him on guitar. The combination made the performance feel intimate and heartfelt, almost like a private musical moment shared in front of a national audience.
The crowd — made up of contestants, families, judges, and industry tastemakers — watched closely as Rumfelt leaned into the soaring chorus. His smooth tone and confident control gave the song both vulnerability and strength, showing why many viewers already consider him one of the season’s standout contestants.
Not everyone offered completely glowing feedback. Shirley Halperin, co-editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone, noted that while his voice carried impressive power and control, a couple of notes felt slightly rough.
But judge Carrie Underwood had plenty of praise for the young singer. Smiling throughout the performance, she told Rumfelt afterward that his voice was “velvety and big,” adding that he had powerful vocals exactly where the song needed them.
Rumfelt’s journey to this moment hasn’t been easy. He has dealt with knee issues for much of his life and has undergone surgery, but he has continued pushing forward toward his musical dreams.
Music has always been part of his upbringing. In a pre-recorded segment before his performance, Rumfelt shared how his father encouraged a musical environment at home, placing instruments near the cribs when he and his twin were babies in hopes that music would become part of their lives.
“That’s the kind of family I grew up in,” Rumfelt explained. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here — much less performing in Hawaii.”
His dedication and talent paid off when the results were announced. Rumfelt successfully advanced into the Top 20, moving one step closer to the season’s grand prize.
As the competition continues, the remaining contestants will perform for America’s votes at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Oahu, guided by superstar mentors Brad Paisley and Keke Palmer.
With his emotional performances and growing confidence on stage, Braden Rumfelt is quickly emerging as one of the singers to watch as the race for the American Idol title continues.
