A powerful moment unfolded on the stage of American Idol when 22-year-old contestant Braden Rumfelt delivered an unforgettable performance that left both judges and audiences impressed.
During the Season 24 Top 30 “Ohana Round,” Rumfelt stepped onto the stage in Hawaii and performed “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. What began as a soft, controlled opening slowly built into an emotional and powerful chorus, allowing him to showcase the rich tone and vocal control that have quickly made him one of the standout voices of the season.
A Performance That Captured the Room
Set against the beautiful tropical backdrop of Hawaii, Rumfelt immediately drew the audience in. His twin brother accompanied him on guitar as he delivered the soulful ballad with a mix of vulnerability and strength.
As the performance progressed, his voice soared through the chorus, revealing both emotional depth and impressive vocal range. Several industry insiders in the crowd appeared visibly moved, reacting with smiles and quiet admiration as Rumfelt hit some of the song’s most powerful moments.

Judges Praise His Powerful Voice
After the performance, judge Carrie Underwood couldn’t hide her excitement.
“Your voice is just velvety and big,” she told him. “You’ve got a lot of power in there, and it’s in all the right places.”
Earlier in the season, fellow judge Luke Bryan had also praised Rumfelt, describing him as a “race horse” in the competition — someone with incredible potential who simply needed to relax more on stage.
Even critics who noticed a few rough notes acknowledged the strength and control in his voice, further confirming his potential as a rising star in the competition.
A Musical Journey That Began in Childhood
Rumfelt’s connection to music started very early in life. Growing up in Murphy, North Carolina, he was surrounded by instruments and encouragement from his family.
In fact, he once shared a story about his father placing musical instruments near the cribs when he and his twin brother were babies, hoping it would spark their musical abilities.
“Growing up in a family where it was cool to sing really got me to this point,” Rumfelt said. “If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here.”
Overcoming Challenges Along the Way
His path hasn’t always been easy. Rumfelt has dealt with knee problems for much of his life and has undergone surgery. Despite those challenges, he continued pursuing music and pushing forward toward his dream.
That determination is now paying off.
One Step Closer to the Dream
Following his powerful performance, Rumfelt successfully advanced into the Top 20, bringing him another step closer to the American Idol title.
In the coming weeks, the remaining contestants will perform for America’s votes at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, where they’ll also receive mentorship from Brad Paisley and Keke Palmer.
With his soulful voice, emotional delivery, and growing confidence on stage, Braden Rumfelt is quietly becoming one of the most formidable contestants of the season—and many fans believe his biggest moments may still be ahead. 🎤✨
