Carrie Underwood Encourages Chloe Lauren to “Finish Strong” After Emotional American Idol Moment

A tense moment on American Idol quickly turned into an inspiring display of encouragement when judge Carrie Underwood supported contestant Chloe Lauren during a difficult performance.

Lauren, a singer from Aiken County, South Carolina, took the stage during the show’s Ohana Round on March 9. For the performance, she chose the emotional ballad Hello by Adele, hoping to impress the judges and secure her place in the next round of the competition.

The performance began smoothly, with Lauren delivering the opening lines confidently. But as the song built toward its powerful chorus, she lost her timing with the band and briefly stumbled over the lyrics.

Instead of letting the moment derail the performance, Underwood immediately stepped in with encouragement from the judges’ table. “Keep going, keep going!” she urged, while the audience also began cheering Lauren on.

“Come on, come on!” Underwood continued, motivating the contestant to push through the mistake.

Taking the advice to heart, Lauren quickly regained her composure and continued the song, finishing the performance despite the emotional pressure. When the music ended, however, she appeared visibly shaken by the experience.

Judge Lionel Richie was quick to offer reassurance, telling her, “You’re alright,” as the crowd applauded her determination.

Carrie Underwood later offered thoughtful feedback about the moment, reminding Lauren that perfection isn’t always what defines a performance.

“You’re here because we love your voice,” Underwood told her. “It’s not about the little things that go wrong. What really matters is how you push past it and finish strong.”

She praised Lauren for recovering quickly after the mistake, adding, “You got back on that horse and took off again. Way to finish strong.”

In a confessional segment after leaving the stage, Lauren admitted that the moment simply overwhelmed her.

“I think I just got lost in myself a little bit,” she said honestly.

The episode also came shortly after Underwood faced some criticism from viewers over comments she made to another contestant about performing without a backing band. As the audience reacted strongly at the time, fellow judge Luke Bryan jumped in to defend her, reminding everyone of her own success on the show.

“She only won this,” Bryan joked, referencing Underwood’s victory on American Idol in 2005. “She knows.”

Despite the tense moments, the episode ultimately highlighted the supportive environment of the competition — where even mistakes can turn into opportunities for growth.

Fans can continue following the contestants’ journeys when American Idol airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. 🎤
