‘I Was Gritting My Teeth, Hoping the Pain Would Stop’: Strictly’s Karen Hauer Opens Up About Sobriety, Healing and Finding Herself Again

Karen Hauer has shared an emotional and deeply honest reflection on a life-changing decision — revealing she has quit alcohol after years of using drinking as a way to cope. As the Strictly Come Dancing professional marks one year sober, she says the journey has forced her to meet herself in a way she never had before.

The Venezuelan-born dancer, known for her fierce presence on the dancefloor, admitted that for a long time alcohol became something she “hid behind.” What began as a way to unwind gradually turned into a mask — one that dulled difficult emotions rather than resolving them.

Looking back, Karen described moments where she felt she was simply enduring life, gritting her teeth and hoping emotional pain would eventually fade. Instead, she realised she was avoiding it. Giving up alcohol, she said, removed that shield and left her face-to-face with emotions she had buried for years.

“It meant meeting a version of myself that felt raw, scared and angry,” Karen revealed. Without alcohol to soften the edges, she had to sit with discomfort and learn how to process feelings she had long pushed aside — something she admits was both terrifying and freeing.

The first months of sobriety were not easy. Karen has spoken about how confronting everyday situations became harder without her old coping mechanisms. But slowly, she says, clarity replaced chaos, and emotional honesty replaced avoidance.

Now, one year on, Karen says she feels more present — both on and off the dancefloor. She credits sobriety with giving her a deeper understanding of herself, stronger boundaries, and a renewed sense of control over her life.

Fans have praised the dancer for speaking so openly, with many thanking her for shedding light on a subject that is often misunderstood or quietly ignored. Karen’s honesty has resonated particularly with those who see themselves in her story.

Rather than presenting sobriety as a perfect or effortless solution, Karen has been clear that it is an ongoing journey — one that requires patience, self-compassion and courage. But she says it has been worth it.

As she continues to dance, teach and inspire, Karen hopes her story encourages others to question their own relationship with alcohol and reminds them that facing yourself — even when it’s uncomfortable — can be the first step toward real healing.
