Kelly Clarkson Calls Out American Idol for “Lying” About Winner’s Prize—More Than 23 Years Later

It’s been over 23 years since Kelly Clarkson won the inaugural season of American Idol, and she’s finally opening up about a prize she never received: a car that was promised as part of her grand prize. The revelation came during Tuesday’s (March 10) episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, where Clarkson was speaking with Rob Rausch, the winner of The Traitors Season 4. Rausch shared that he was still waiting to receive the $220,800 prize he had won on the show, and Clarkson instantly related.

“I relate to this so hardcore,” Clarkson told Rausch, according to Us Weekly. “You probably weren’t alive when I was on American Idol, but I was literally on the show, and they were like, ‘Oh, you win a million dollars,’ or whatever. No, you didn’t. They lied. You did not. It was like a million dollars’ worth of investment in you—but the car? I never got it!”

At the time, the official prize for winning American Idol was a $1 million recording contract. Clarkson signed with RCA Records in partnership with Idol’s 19 Recordings and went on to achieve massive success: multiple top-ten singles, platinum albums, Grammy Awards, and even Emmy Awards. Yet, the one promised prize that never materialized was the car—a significant disappointment for Clarkson at the time, especially since her own car was damaged and she couldn’t afford the insurance deductible.

Adding salt to the wound, Clarkson later learned that Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken and his mother both received cars. “I was like, ‘What the f***?’” she recalled with humor. “I remember Clay telling me that second season… he was like, ‘Yeah, they gave my mom one.’ I was like, ‘I’m gonna actually kick your ass right now.’”

Other winners have been luckier when it comes to the car prize. Season 4 champion Carrie Underwood—who now serves as a judge on American Idol—still treasures the Ford Mustang convertible she won. In a 2023 interview on Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen, Underwood said, “It always makes me want to drive it more, because it was such a pivotal point in my life. That was the car that I was driving around when I first moved to Tennessee, and I’m very, very glad I still have that car.”

Despite the missing car, Clarkson’s career flourished. She has become one of the most successful American Idol alumni in history, with a string of chart-topping hits, Grammy Awards, and critically acclaimed albums. Still, the story highlights a surprising behind-the-scenes reality of reality TV: not all promises are kept, even to winners.

Beyond her Idol reflections, Clarkson is preparing for a new chapter in her personal life. She returned to her daytime talk show on March 9 after a brief hiatus, announcing in February that the seventh and final season of The Kelly Clarkson Show will air this fall. Clarkson shared that stepping away from the daily schedule will allow her to focus on her family, including her daughter River and son Remy, whom she shares with her late ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, who passed away in August 2025 at the age of 48.

“Stepping away from the daily schedule will allow me to prioritize my kids, which feels necessary and right for this next chapter of our lives,” Clarkson wrote on Instagram in February.

Even more than two decades after her historic win, Clarkson’s story reminds fans that fame doesn’t always come with every promised reward—but it doesn’t stop her from achieving greatness either.
