Robert Irwin has never shied away from speaking about his father’s legacy — but this week, he shared a moment so personal, so raw, that it left listeners in tears right alongside him.
Appearing on The Viall Files podcast, the 21-year-old conservationist and television personality became visibly emotional as he opened up about one of the final messages his late father, Steve Irwin, recorded for him. Though Robert was only two years old when Steve tragically died in 2006, the words his father left behind have continued to guide him in profound ways.
Steve Irwin was killed on September 4, 2006, after being pierced in the chest by a short-tail stingray barb while filming on the Great Barrier Reef. His sudden passing shocked the world — but for his family, the loss was deeply personal and life-altering.

Robert revealed that years after his father’s death, he discovered a video Steve had recorded — a message intended not just for the present, but for the future his children would one day grow into.
“For me, watching that video felt like a gift,” Robert said through tears. “It’s there. It’s real. It’s in writing. I’m watching him look straight into the camera and say, ‘I’m not always going to be here.’”
In the clip, Steve spoke about building something lasting — a legacy rooted in conservation, passion, and purpose — something his children could one day continue.
“He told me, ‘I’m creating something that you can carry on,’” Robert shared. “That was his whole mission — to leave a legacy his kids could continue. And he said that years before he passed.”
The emotional revelation came during an already powerful week for Robert, who also left audiences deeply moved during his appearance on Dancing with the Stars US. The episode’s theme, Dedications Night, gave Robert and his partner, Witney Carson, the opportunity to honor someone who has shaped his life in immeasurable ways — his mother, Terri Irwin.
Before stepping onto the dance floor, Robert struggled to contain his emotion as he spoke about Terri’s strength following Steve’s death.
“I was two when I lost my dad,” he said. “As I got older, I started to realize just how hard it must have been for her — raising us, holding everything together, and still continuing the legacy that she and Dad built side by side.”

The pair performed a heartfelt routine to Phil Collins’ You’ll Be in My Heart, a song that perfectly captured the night’s emotion. The performance was flawless — but the most unforgettable moment came at the end.
As the music faded, Terri surprised Robert by stepping onto the stage. Overcome with emotion, Robert broke down in tears as he wrapped his mother in a tight embrace, the crowd rising in applause.
Terri, herself fighting back tears, later said, “I love him so much. I’m so blessed to be his mum.”

Robert responded with a message that resonated far beyond the ballroom: “This dance is for my mum — and for all the mums who don’t always get the recognition they deserve. If you can, call your mum and tell her you love her.”
In sharing his father’s final message and honoring his mother’s unwavering strength, Robert Irwin offered the world a rare glimpse into a bond that transcends time — one built on love, resilience, and a legacy that continues to shine.
