The latest episode of American Idol delivered one of the most dramatic moments of the season as the competition narrowed from 30 contestants down to the Top 20 during the show’s first-ever Ohana Round. But while many singers celebrated moving forward, several unexpected eliminations left fans stunned and sparked heated reactions online.
During the March 9 episode, judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie were not the only people making decisions. The Ohana Round introduced a unique twist: three groups — fellow contestants, family members, and industry tastemakers — helped select three Platinum Ticket winners, while the judges chose the remaining singers who would advance.
With only 20 spots available, that meant 10 contestants had to go home, and some of those eliminations surprised viewers the most.
Sheldon Riley’s Emotional Moment
One of the most heartbreaking moments came from Sheldon Riley, the 26-year-old singer from Melbourne, Australia. Known around the world for performing in elaborate costumes and masks, Riley has been using American Idol as an opportunity to show audiences a more authentic side of himself.
Before his performance, Riley delivered a deeply emotional message to the crowd. Looking at the families gathered in the audience, he admitted he didn’t have anyone there to support him in person.
Fighting back tears, he explained that his musical journey had often been a lonely one, adding that sometimes people must build their own “family” when life doesn’t give them the one they hoped for.
He then attempted to perform To Build a Home by The Cinematic Orchestra, but the emotion overwhelmed him. Although he managed to sing several powerful lines, he struggled to complete the performance.
Carrie Underwood later praised his vocal talent but suggested his nerves sometimes hold him back. Despite the emotional moment, Riley was ultimately eliminated.
Chloe Lauren’s Journey Comes to an End
Another surprising exit was Chloe Lauren, a 25-year-old stay-at-home mom from Warrenville, South Carolina. Lauren had impressed the judges during her audition and even won a Hollywood Week sing-off that helped secure her place in the Top 30.
However, during the Ohana Round, she faced challenges while performing Hello by Adele. Issues with the band and visible nerves caused parts of the performance to feel shaky.
Luke Bryan quietly noted she needed to control her emotions during high-pressure moments, although Underwood still encouraged her for finishing the performance strongly. In the end, though, Lauren did not make the Top 20.
Fans Shocked by Bryant Thomas’ Exit
Perhaps the most debated elimination involved Bryant Thomas. Many viewers believed he had one of the strongest voices in the competition.
Before singing, Thomas shared a personal update about recently moving from Mobile, Alabama to South Florida, explaining that he had been feeling disconnected from friends and family.
He then performed Landslide by Fleetwood Mac, delivering an emotional performance that earned a standing ovation from all three judges.
Even so, Luke Bryan mentioned that some parts of the performance became a bit too intense vocally. Despite being one of the judges’ favorite voices earlier in the competition, Thomas was also eliminated.
Fans React Online
As soon as the results aired, social media quickly filled with reactions from shocked viewers. Many fans flooded Bryant Thomas’ pages with messages of support, with some insisting his elimination was one of the biggest surprises of the season.
Some viewers even began calling for a wild-card return, hoping the show might bring back one or more eliminated contestants.
Other Contestants Eliminated
Along with Riley, Lauren, and Thomas, several other singers were also sent home during the round. Those eliminated included Bella Emry, Tianna Roberts, Brianna Yancey, Kiera Howell, Jacquie Lee, Brenna Brigman, and Michael Garner.
What Happens Next
With the Top 20 now set, the competition will continue in Hawaii at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. Starting March 16, the remaining contestants will perform for America’s votes, bringing the show one step closer to crowning the next winner.
If the passionate fan reactions are any indication, however, the debate over these shocking eliminations may continue long after the episode ends. 🎤
