For more than two decades, Tess Daly has been the steady heartbeat of Strictly Come Dancing. On Saturday night, that era came to a close — and now, Tess has finally found the words to say goodbye.
After signing off from the ballroom for the very last time alongside longtime co-host Claudia Winkleman, the 56-year-old presenter shared a deeply emotional message with fans, reflecting on 21 unforgettable years at the helm of one of Britain’s most-loved television shows.
The final was already charged with emotion. As ex-footballer Karen Carney lifted the Glitterball Trophy with professional partner Carlos Gu, Tess and Claudia stood side by side, visibly fighting back tears as they delivered their final farewell. It was a moment that marked not just the end of a series — but the end of an era.
When the cameras stopped rolling, Tess took to social media to thank the viewers who had supported the show — and her — for more than two decades. Sharing behind-the-scenes clips of herself and Claudia during the finale, she wrote with heartfelt sincerity:
“So that’s a wrap. What an incredible final — fitting for what, for me, has been an absolutely brilliant series.”
She went on to describe Strictly as far more than a television programme.
“It is a show made with love, where joy is the currency and the only agenda. That love comes from every single member of the team who makes it, because to none of them is it just a job. It is a gift — and it is truly treasured.”
Her words struck a chord with fans, as Tess continued:
“I will be forever grateful for the unforgettable years I’ve spent sharing this magical show with you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the memories of a lifetime.”
Tributes poured in almost instantly. Rylan Clark called Tess and Claudia “irreplaceable,” while Zoe Ball hailed Tess as an “absolute goddess.” Claudia herself shared glimpses of Strictly-themed cakes sent to her dressing room, along with warm backstage photos of the team who helped shape the show behind the scenes.
But perhaps the most powerful moment of the night came during the live finale itself. Tess and Claudia were left stunned when Craig Revel Horwood revealed a surprise message from Queen Camilla. In her heartfelt letter, the Queen praised their partnership, describing it as one of the greatest in the show’s history.
“Strictly is not just about dancing,” the message read, “but about friendships, bonds forged, struggles overcome, and joy shared. If that is true, then perhaps yours has been the greatest partnership of all.”
The tribute left both presenters visibly overwhelmed. A tearful Tess struggled to respond, simply saying, “I can’t speak now. What an honour.” Claudia added: “It has been a privilege to be part of your weekends.”
Tess’s departure also marks a historic milestone. Earlier this week, she was awarded a Guinness World Record for being the longest-serving host of the same dance competition — having fronted Strictly for 21 years and 216 days. Her journey began in 2004 alongside the late Sir Bruce Forsyth, whom she presented with until his retirement in 2013, before Claudia joined her on the main show.
As the final glitter settled and the studio lights dimmed, one thing became clear: Tess Daly didn’t just host Strictly Come Dancing — she helped define it.
And while her time in the ballroom may be over, the legacy she leaves behind will keep dancing on for years to come. 💫💃
