Lainey Grace, a high school student and Chick-fil-A employee from Prattville, Alabama, auditioned during the Season 24 premiere of American Idol, held at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Sitting at the piano, Grace delivered a heartfelt cover of “Honest,” a song written by independent artist Kyndal Inskeep.
What Grace didn’t know was that Inskeep herself was next in line to audition.
A Songwriter Moved to Tears
As Grace sang, Inskeep listened from backstage — and quickly became overwhelmed with emotion. Hearing her own lyrics interpreted with such vulnerability brought the songwriter to tears, creating a powerful, unscripted moment that none of the contestants or judges expected.
Grace told judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood that she discovered the song through her sister and felt instantly connected to its message.
A Split Decision From the Judges
Luke Bryan was the first to respond, voting to send Grace to Hollywood Week and praising her natural ability.
“You’ve got a tone and sound in your voice that’s undeniable,” Bryan said.
Carrie Underwood, however, wasn’t fully convinced. While she acknowledged Grace’s potential, she felt the young singer was still holding back.
“It’s a ‘not quite yet’ for me,” Underwood said. “You’re a little timid, but there’s a lot there.”
