Luke Bryan Gets Full-Body Chills After Trew The Star’s Emotional American Idol Audition

Trew The Star delivered a performance on American Idol that was about far more than vocal ability. The 24-year-old singer from Alabama left judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood visibly moved during the latest episode, sharing not only his voice but also a deeply personal story shaped by loss, forgiveness, and perseverance.

Ahead of his audition, viewers were introduced to Trew’s background in a pre-recorded package that highlighted his close bond with his late mother. He recalled watching American Idol with her when he was young, explaining that the show served as his first real introduction to music and planted the seed for his dream of becoming a singer.

While those memories were filled with warmth, Trew’s childhood was far from easy. He spoke candidly about growing up in a household marked by instability, as his mother struggled with addiction and his family faced ongoing financial hardship. Although she eventually became sober, Trew shared that he lost her in 2022—just as he was beginning to fully understand her struggles and find forgiveness for the pain his family endured.

Fighting back tears, Trew explained to the Idol cameras that his audition represented more than a chance to advance in the competition. “I had just started to understand at that time and I had just started to forgive her for a lot of things that we went through as kids,” he said. “For me it’s about more than auditioning. It’s about my family—showing them that you can do anything you put your mind to.”

For his performance, Trew chose to cover Sam Cooke’s classic ballad “Nothing Can Change This Love,” a song that allowed him to showcase both his rich vocal tone and emotional depth. From the first note, the room fell silent as the judges listened intently, clearly moved by the sincerity of his delivery. The performance was so powerful that Lionel Richie stepped away from the judges’ table to embrace Trew once he finished singing.

Carrie Underwood praised not only his voice but his storytelling ability. “You have a commanding voice, but I think my favorite part was your delivery,” she said. “You weren’t just singing—you were telling us a story, and it felt completely real and believable.”

Luke Bryan echoed that sentiment, revealing just how deeply the audition affected him. “It was the first time in three days that I’ve had full-body chills the whole time,” Bryan told Trew. “It was so real and genuine. I just cheer for you.”

Richie added his own stamp of approval, telling the young singer, “We have been waiting on you,” signaling strong confidence in Trew’s potential moving forward in the competition.

The emotional moment continued when Trew’s family joined him in the audition room, where the judges confirmed that he had earned a coveted Golden Ticket to Hollywood Week. Overcome with emotion, Trew reflected on what the moment meant to him and his loved ones.

“I think they’re just really proud of me,” he said. “And I know my mom is watching.” Holding up his Golden Ticket, he summed up the moment simply and powerfully: “This is hope.”

American Idol airs Mondays on ABC.
