How Many American Idol Contestants Will Go Home in Episode 11 After Last Week’s Unprecedented Delay?

American Idol delivered one of its most shocking moments yet during the March 30 episode—leaving fans, judges, and contestants completely stunned.

During Episode 10, the Top 14 took the stage for the “Songs of Faith” night, with two eliminations expected. But in a surprising twist, host Ryan Seacrest announced that no results would be revealed.

“We’ve had tens of millions of votes coming in at a rate we’ve never seen before,” Seacrest explained. To ensure accuracy, the show made the unprecedented decision to delay eliminations—something that has never happened before in the show’s history.

 What Happens in Episode 11?

Episode 11, airing April 6, will make up for the delay with a double round of eliminations:

  • At the start of the episode: Two contestants will be eliminated based on last week’s votes, officially revealing the Top 12.
  • At the end of the episode: After the Top 12 perform in the Judges’ Song Contest, one more contestant will be sent home, narrowing the competition to the Top 11.

That means three contestants in total will leave the competition in one dramatic night.

 Why Were the Results Delayed?

This season introduced multiple voting methods, including social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, along with website and text voting.

The overwhelming response led to a record-breaking surge in votes—so large that production couldn’t finalize accurate results in time for the live broadcast.

Seacrest later revealed that he was handed a results card with no names on it, as producers rushed to ensure every vote was properly counted.

Reactions From Judges and Contestants

Judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan were just as surprised as viewers.

Lionel Richie joked that the show had “broken the system,” while Luke Bryan admitted the judges were completely unaware of the situation as it unfolded.

Meanwhile, contestants took a more positive view of the delay. Some saw it as an unexpected gift—an extra week to prepare and spend time together, even amid the uncertainty.

A High-Stakes Night Ahead

With three eliminations and live performances all in one episode, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

What began as a technical delay has now turned into one of the most intense and unpredictable nights of the season.

And by the end of Episode 11, American Idol will look very different.
