American Idol Reveals Top 3 as Early Finale Plans Build Toward an Unpredictable Showdown

American Idol Season 24 is officially heading into its final stage, with the Top 3 contestants now confirmed after an emotional and star-filled live episode on May 4.

After weeks of competition and millions of votes, Hannah Harper, Keyla Richardson, and Jordan McCullough have secured their places in the grand finale. Meanwhile, Braden Rumfelt and Chris Tungseth were eliminated, just missing out on the final round.

A Night of Nostalgia and High Stakes

The semifinal episode doubled as a celebration of the show’s legacy, marking a 20-year reunion of the Season 5 “Class of 2006.”

Fan-favorite alumni returned to the stage, including:

  • Taylor Hicks
  • Kellie Pickler
  • Paris Bennett
  • Bucky Covington
  • Elliott Yamin

Each was paired with a current contestant for special duet performances, blending past and present in one of the most memorable nights of the season.

Adding to the nostalgia, original judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson returned as mentors, with Abdul also joining Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood at the judges’ table.

Standout Performances from the Top 5

Each contestant delivered two performances — a solo and a duet — with everything on the line.

  • Hannah Harper impressed with “Fever” and an emotional duet of “A Broken Wing” with Kellie Pickler.
  • Jordan McCullough moved the audience with “Footprints in the Sand” and teamed up with Elliott Yamin for “A Song for You.”
  • Keyla Richardson energized the stage with “River Deep – Mountain High” and a dynamic duet of “Living for the City” with Taylor Hicks.
  • Braden Rumfelt performed “Lose Control” before returning with “The Show Must Go On” alongside Paris Bennett.
  • Chris Tungseth delivered “Northern Attitude” and later joined Bucky Covington for “The Thunder Rolls.”

The night also featured a special appearance from Season 23 winner Jamal Roberts, along with performances enhanced by Dancing With the Stars professionals including Witney Carson, Gleb Savchenko, Jan Ravnik, and Rylee Arnold.

Emotional Eliminations Set the Final Stage

As the live votes were revealed, the competition narrowed to its final three. While the results reflected recent voting trends, the eliminations of Braden and Chris still sparked strong reactions from fans who had followed their journeys closely.

With the Top 3 now locked in, the focus shifts fully to the finale.

What to Expect in the Grand Finale

The Season 24 finale promises to be a major television event. The three-hour live show will feature Alicia Keys as a guest mentor and performer, celebrating her debut album Songs in A Minor.

She is also expected to perform alongside the finalists, adding another layer of excitement to an already high-stakes night.

The Final Countdown Begins

With early plans for the finale now revealed, anticipation is building for what could be one of the most unpredictable endings in recent American Idol history.

Three finalists remain. One title is up for grabs.

And after a season full of surprises, the outcome is anything but certain.
