Twenty-two-year-old singer Braden Rumfelt continues to prove he’s one of the most versatile voices on American Idol Season 24. The Murphy, North Carolina native delivered a powerful and emotional performance of If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys, earning him a well-deserved spot in the Top 20.
From the start of the competition, Rumfelt has shown that he can take on almost any song and make it his own. During his audition, he impressed the judges with Girl Crush by Little Big Town, showcasing a smooth country tone. Later, during Hollywood Week at Belmont University, he revealed another side of his artistry with I’m Not the Only One by Sam Smith.
This time, Rumfelt crossed into soul and R&B territory — and the result was just as impressive.
A Soulful Moment in Hawaii
His latest performance aired during the Top 30 “Ohana Round” episode, filmed in a stunning outdoor setting in Hawaii. With palm trees swaying behind him and the tropical atmosphere setting the tone, Rumfelt stepped on stage wearing a relaxed outfit that matched the laid-back island vibe.
As the music began, he delivered the opening lines with calm control and subtle emotion. But as the performance built toward the chorus, Rumfelt unleashed the full power of his voice. His smooth tone, soulful phrasing, and emotional delivery captivated both the audience and the judges.
Adding to the moment, his twin brother accompanied him on guitar, making the performance feel even more personal.
Judges and Industry Experts React
Rumfelt performed in front of fellow contestants, their families, the judges, and several music industry insiders. Many in the crowd appeared visibly moved as he hit the song’s most emotional moments.
Judge Luke Bryan had previously described Rumfelt as a “race horse,” noting his strong potential while encouraging him to loosen up on stage.
Not every critique was perfect, however. Shirley Halperin, editor at Rolling Stone, acknowledged the singer’s strengths while offering a bit of constructive feedback.
“I thought he had really great control and power to his voice, but he hit a couple of rough notes,” she noted.
Meanwhile, judge Carrie Underwood had nothing but praise.
“I feel like I had the biggest smile on my face the whole time,” she told Rumfelt. “Your voice is velvety and big. You’ve got a lot of power in there, and in all the right places.”
Overcoming Challenges
Rumfelt’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. He has struggled with knee issues for much of his life and has undergone surgery, but the obstacles haven’t slowed him down.
Music has always been at the heart of his life. In a pre-performance clip, Rumfelt shared how his family helped shape his passion for music from a young age.
“When I was a baby, my dad would put musical instruments at the bottom of our cribs,” he said. “Growing up in a family where it’s cool to sing — that’s what got me here. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here, much less going to Hawaii.”
One Step Closer to the Title
With his soulful performance, Braden Rumfelt officially advanced to the Top 20, bringing him one step closer to the American Idol crown. As the competition intensifies, he is quietly becoming one of the contestants to watch this season.
If his performances so far are any indication, Rumfelt may just continue surprising audiences with every song he takes on.
