Carrie Underwood Says This American Idol Contestant Has the Strongest Voice Yet

American Idol may have just uncovered its next breakout star — and Carrie Underwood is already convinced.

During the February 2 episode of American Idol, 24-year-old Makiyah, a bank employee from Arkansas, stepped onto the audition stage and instantly left the judges stunned. From the very first note of her performance of Jennifer Hudson’s “Love You I Do,” it was clear something special was happening.

Before singing, Makiyah shared that most of her performing happens in church and around her small hometown. But once she opened her mouth, the judges knew she belonged on a far bigger stage.

Luke Bryan couldn’t hide his excitement.
“My cheeks have been smiling the whole time,” he said. “You light up the room. Your energy — it’s the energy.”

Carrie Underwood was just as impressed, praising Makiyah’s flawless control and vocal strength.
“You didn’t miss a note,” Carrie said. “So good, so strong, and in control of everything.”

Then came the comment that truly set Makiyah apart.

“Your voice is easily the strongest voice we’ve heard so far,” Carrie declared, adding, “You are meant to be here right now.”

Lionel Richie echoed that sentiment, calling Makiyah the kind of contestant the judges hope for every season.
“We pray for the standout,” he said. “The one who sets the curve, who puts pressure on everybody else. Who’s going to lead the class? It’s you.”

Luke summed it up perfectly, saying Makiyah represents “what American Idol is all about,” before asking the question on everyone’s mind:
“Why have we not seen you yet?”

Makiyah’s answer was simple and heartfelt.
“God’s timing,” she said. “Singing brings me peace. It brings me joy. Taking this journey with you all would be wonderful.”

As if her audition wasn’t memorable enough, Makiyah’s family joined her in the room to celebrate — and the talent clearly runs deep. Her 11-year-old brother surprised everyone with an impromptu performance of Keyshia Cole’s “Love,” earning stunned reactions from the judges once again.

Moments later, Makiyah officially received her Golden Ticket to Hollywood Week.

“I worked very hard to be here today,” she said afterward. “I feel very proud.”

With praise like this and a voice that’s already setting the bar, Makiyah’s American Idol journey is just beginning — and all eyes are on her.

American Idol airs Mondays on ABC.
