More than two decades after capturing hearts on American Idol, Clay Aiken is heading back to where it all began — and he’s bringing brand-new music with him.
The fan-favorite Season 2 runner-up officially announced that he will return to the Idol stage for the Season 24 finale on May 11, marking his first performance on the show in years. Even more exciting for longtime supporters: Aiken revealed he’ll debut his first new single in 18 years during the broadcast.
Sharing the news on Instagram, the 47-year-old singer posted artwork for the upcoming track alongside a fresh promotional photo, calling the moment a nostalgic “Rewind” for fans who have followed his journey since 2003.

“It’s official! I’m headed back to the Idol stage on May 11 to perform my first new single in eighteen years!” Aiken wrote.
He also playfully encouraged fans to relive their early-2000s memories, joking:
“Head up to the attic and dig out those old posters and t-shirts! I know you still got em!”
The announcement immediately sparked excitement online, with fans flooding the comments section to celebrate his return. Many called it one of the most anticipated Idol moments in years, while others praised Aiken as one of the show’s most memorable stars.
Aiken first rose to fame in 2003 after finishing runner-up to Ruben Studdard. Although he didn’t take home the Idol crown, he went on to build a successful career spanning music, television, Broadway, and public service.
Over the years, he released multiple albums, appeared on shows including The Office and Phineas and Ferb, and starred in the Broadway production of Monty Python’s Spamalot. He also reunited with Studdard for a holiday tour in 2018.
Beyond entertainment, Aiken has remained a prominent public figure and LGBTQ+ advocate. He publicly came out as gay in 2008 after becoming a father, later saying the decision was inspired by his desire to raise his son with honesty and openness.
Now, 21 years after becoming one of Idol’s most unforgettable contestants, Clay Aiken is stepping back into the spotlight — and fans are more than ready for the comeback.
