One of the most unexpected breakout stories of American Idol Season 24 belongs to Brooks Rosser, a 22-year-old singer from Bel Air, Maryland whose journey to the Top 20 has captured viewers’ hearts.
What stunned both the judges and the audience most was Rosser’s surprising confession: before auditioning for the show, he had never actually sung in public.

A Life Inspired by Compassion
Outside of music, Rosser works at a dementia care facility, a job he describes as deeply meaningful. His decision to work in that field was inspired by the difficult experience of watching his beloved grandmother struggle with dementia.
Helping care for her changed the direction of his life.
“After taking care of my grandma, I realized this was my passion—to be there for people even if they don’t remember me,” Rosser shared.
Music also became an important part of those moments with his grandmother. During her illness, he would sing and play guitar for her, something he says helped both of them cope.
“It helped her learn her words back, and it helped me get mine out,” he explained.
A Devastating Injury That Changed Everything
Rosser’s path to music wasn’t originally part of the plan. As a child, he had dreams of becoming a professional soccer player.
But when he was a freshman in high school, a serious injury changed his life forever. While taking a free kick during a game, he suffered a broken back, instantly ending his athletic ambitions.
“I planted my foot and felt something switch in my lower back,” he recalled. “I couldn’t feel my legs. I snapped my back in half, and everything changed.”
After the injury, Rosser admitted he felt lost for a long time. Eventually, he picked up a guitar—something that slowly helped him rediscover purpose and creativity.
A Rising Star on American Idol
Now, that unexpected musical journey has led Rosser to one of television’s biggest stages. His heartfelt story, combined with his soulful voice, has made him one of the most intriguing contestants of the season.
While Rosser has kept his personal life mostly private—joking on social media that he’s currently “in a committed relationship with my instrument”—his focus remains firmly on music.
