Kelly Clarkson Misses The Voice Battle Rehearsals After Heartbreaking Family Loss

A surprising and emotional moment unfolded behind the scenes of The Voice Season 29 when coach Kelly Clarkson was forced to miss her team’s Battle Round rehearsals due to a devastating personal tragedy.

During the filming of the season, Clarkson’s ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock — and the father of her two children — passed away after battling melanoma on August 7, 2025. The loss came while the show was still in production, leaving Clarkson unable to attend the early rehearsal sessions with her team.

Jennifer Hudson Steps In to Help

Before the Battle Rounds began, Clarkson had already chosen Jennifer Hudson as her team advisor — a decision that quickly proved invaluable. Hudson, who previously served as a coach on the show, stepped in to guide Team Kelly through rehearsals while Clarkson dealt with the heartbreaking situation.

Even though she couldn’t be there in person, Clarkson later shared that she carefully watched the rehearsal footage and reviewed the notes Hudson left for her.

“I really hated that I couldn’t be there for the rehearsals,” Clarkson explained. “But I watched the videos, and Jennifer left great notes for me. It was amazing information.”

The Battle Round Begins

When the Battle Round episode aired, Clarkson joined fellow coaches Adam Levine and John Legend as contestants from their teams faced off in musical duets. Each pair performed the same song, with only one singer moving forward in the competition.

One of the most talked-about battles featured Team Kelly’s artists Liv Ciara and Mikenley Brown, who delivered a smooth and soulful performance of “Focus” by H.E.R..

Judges Praise the Performance

After the performance, the coaches shared their reactions.

John Legend praised both singers for their strong vocals and harmonies, highlighting Liv’s impressive vocal range while also complimenting Mikenley’s sultry tone.

Adam Levine went even further with his praise.

“In my opinion, in all the seasons I’ve been on this show, that’s the best Battle Round I’ve ever heard,” he said, applauding how well the two performers worked together on stage.

Kelly Clarkson Faces a Difficult Decision

Despite the praise, only one singer could continue in the competition. Before making her choice, Clarkson reflected on the feedback Jennifer Hudson had given during rehearsals.

“She said you blend so well together that sometimes it’s hard to hear your individuality,” Clarkson explained. “But today you both showed exactly who you are. You elevated each other instead of competing.”

Still, the decision wasn’t easy.

“This is really hard,” Clarkson admitted. “I hate having to choose between you right now.”

A Season Filled With Emotion

Clarkson’s absence from rehearsals was an unexpected moment in the season, but the support from Jennifer Hudson and the strength of her team helped keep the competition moving forward.

As the Battle Rounds continue on The Voice, fans are watching closely to see which contestants will move on to the next stage — and how Team Kelly will perform as the competition heats up.

New episodes of The Voice air Monday nights on NBC and are available for streaming the following day on Peacock. 🎤
