When Braden Rumfelt stepped onto the stage during the Top 20 performances of American Idol, he delivered a moment that quickly became one of the most talked-about performances of the night.
Performing at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, the 22-year-old singer captivated the audience with a soulful rendition of “Love On The Brain” by Rihanna.
A Song Choice With a Personal Touch
Rumfelt revealed that the idea to perform the song didn’t actually come from him.
“My girlfriend suggested that I do this song,” he shared during rehearsals with mentors Brad Paisley and Keke Palmer.
Once the mentors heard him rehearse the track, they instantly realized he had something special. Palmer admitted she was blown away by his voice, while Paisley said moments like that are exactly what makes American Idol so exciting.
“That’s maybe my favorite thing about this show,” Paisley said. “When someone walks out and you just go, ‘Wait a minute… no way that’s happening.’”
A Performance That Captured the Room
When Rumfelt finally performed the song on stage, the reaction was immediate. From the very first note, he drew the crowd in with smooth vocals and emotional delivery.
Moving effortlessly between powerful belts and softer, delicate runs, his performance showcased both vocal strength and control. The audience responded with loud cheers as he sang the hit’s emotional chorus.
Judges Left Impressed
The judges couldn’t hide their excitement after the performance.
Carrie Underwood praised Rumfelt’s voice and natural charm, saying the moment he began singing, the impact was instant.
“From the first note, it was like — pew — immediately,” she said. “You just have an incredible voice, and there’s something about you that makes people like you.”
Luke Bryan also applauded the singer’s talent while encouraging him to continue building confidence on stage and fully embrace his presence as a performer.
Meanwhile, Lionel Richie joked that Rumfelt’s soulful sound was so surprising it made him question everything.
“I’ve never in all my years on this show called for an Ancestry test,” Richie laughed. “That was so soulful it scared me.”
Palmer added that watching Rumfelt perform felt natural and effortless, praising how comfortably he moved across the stage while singing.
Chasing the Dream
Rumfelt’s journey on American Idol has been supported closely by his family, including his twin brother, who previously accompanied him on guitar during the Ohana Round.
But the young singer says he’s ready to push himself even further.
“I think it’s time for me to chase this dream on my own,” he shared. “I want to go as far as I can in this competition. I’m going to try and win it.”
A Rising Star to Watch
Originally from North Carolina, Rumfelt first caught the judges’ attention during his audition with “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town. Since then, he has continued to impress with performances of “I’m Not The Only One” by Sam Smith and “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys.
Now, as the competition moves forward and viewers vote for their favorites, Rumfelt remains one of the standout voices hoping to secure a place in the Top 14.
With performances like this one, many fans believe he may be just getting started. 🎤✨
