Keyla Richardson is keeping her head high after finishing in third place on American Idol Season 24 — even as her mom’s emotional reaction sparked a heated debate online.
Following the finale, the 29-year-old singer took to Instagram to celebrate her journey and thank fans for their support. Sharing photos from her powerful performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Love the Lord,” Richardson reflected on how far she’s come.

While Richardson appeared grateful and optimistic, her mother, Katja, had a much stronger reaction to the results. Shortly after the finale aired, Katja posted on Facebook that her daughter had been “robbed” of the American Idol title — a statement that quickly caught fans’ attention and fueled online debate.
“My baby was robbed. She did not fail,” Katja wrote. “She was robbed I’m sorry I’m gonna say it!!”
Despite the controversy, Richardson continued to focus on the positive. She later shared a video alongside Season 23 finalist Breanna Nix, who also finished in third place during her season. The two reflected on their shared Idol experience, with Richardson making it clear she sees the placement as a win, not a loss.
“Season 23 & Season 24 3rd place finalist! It’s NOT BAD AT ALL, it’s actually GREAT,” Richardson wrote. “I’m excited about what’s coming. It’s only up from here!”
During the star-studded finale, Richardson impressed viewers with performances of Alicia Keys’ “Un-Thinkable” and a duet with Jason Mraz on “I Won’t Give Up.” Her performances also earned praise from judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie.
“This whole year I just watched you focus with drive and determination,” Bryan told her. “Watching you give it your all for your family and your people has been inspiring.”

Richardson ultimately finished behind runner-up Jordan McCullough and winner Hannah Harper, who later thanked fans for supporting her “wild, beautiful journey” throughout the competition.
With fans continuing to rally behind her online, Richardson’s Idol story may just be the beginning of what’s next for the rising singer.
