From Fergus Falls to the National Spotlight: Chris Tungseth’s American Idol Journey Inspires a Community

When Chris Tungseth steps onto the American Idol stage each week, he may stand there alone—but back home in Fergus Falls, an entire community is cheering him on.

Now officially in the Top 5, the 2021 M State graduate has turned his Idol journey into something much bigger than a singing competition. It’s become a celebration of hometown pride, school spirit, and the power of staying true to your roots.

Chris’s connection to M State runs deep. A former standout athlete—playing both football and basketball—and named the 2018 Spartan Student Athlete of the Year, he continues to give back as an assistant volleyball coach. Family is at the heart of his story too—his sister Laura serves as head volleyball coach and assistant director of student life, and their entire family shares strong ties to the college.

But according to Laura, Chris’s journey has never been just about music.

“It’s about heart, perseverance, and showing up—even when things get tough,” she shared, traveling back and forth from Fergus Falls to Los Angeles to support him. “Our family has faced challenges, so seeing him live his dream on a national stage means everything to us.”

Back home, the support has been nothing short of electric. From watch parties and custom t-shirts to social media campaigns and late-night voting pushes, the message is loud and clear: Fergus Falls stands behind Chris.

And the excitement is only building.

If Chris makes it into the Top 3, the town is ready to go all out with a full-scale “Chris Tungseth Day” on May 6. Plans include a lively downtown parade and a live outdoor concert at Kirkbride Park—complete with an American Idol film crew capturing every unforgettable moment.

One thing is certain: Chris Tungseth isn’t just chasing a dream—he’s bringing his entire community along for the journey.
