When Iam Tongi stepped back onto the stage of American Idol, it felt like a powerful full-circle moment for the singer who once captured the nation’s heart.
The 21-year-old Hawaii native returned to the show during the special Hawaii episodes filmed at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, delivering a heartfelt performance of his song “Good For My Soul.” The emotional performance reminded fans exactly why his voice resonated so deeply when he won Season 21 of the competition.
A Song That Comes From the Heart
“Good For My Soul” holds a special meaning for Tongi. The song was co-written with Johnny Reid and Tyler Gain and also serves as the title track of his debut album.
Tongi once explained that the inspiration behind the song traces back to advice from his father.
“My dad taught me that when you sing and write music, it has to come from the soul. Otherwise you’re just making noise.”
That belief became the foundation for the album, which features 13 tracks including fan-favorite songs like “I Do,” “What I’m Gonna Do,” and “Love In Paradise,” a duet with Ava Reid.
Reflecting on the Journey
Returning to the Idol stage in his home state gave Tongi a chance to reflect on how much his life has changed since his emotional audition in 2023.
He admitted that when he first competed on the show, he thought winning American Idol would mean he had already “made it.”
But reality quickly taught him something different.
According to Tongi, creating his debut album required far more work than he ever expected — countless writing sessions, long hours in the studio, and plenty of revisions along the way.
Still, he says every moment of the process was worth it.
“I’m really proud of this album,” Tongi shared. “Mostly because it really sounds like me — not what people think I am, but actually me.”
A Special Island Collaboration
The night became even more memorable when Tongi invited fellow Idol alum Thunderstorm Artis to join him on stage.
Together, the two delivered a relaxed and joyful performance of “Island Style,” filling the stage with warm island energy and celebrating their shared roots.
For fans watching, the moment felt less like a performance and more like a celebration of friendship, music, and the journey that began on the American Idol stage.
And for Iam Tongi, returning to where it all started proved that sometimes the biggest dreams are only the beginning of the story. 🎤🌺
